Pre-Filter Cartridges: common questions
What order do pre-filters go in before an RO membrane?
Run the sediment filter first to catch grit and rust, then the carbon filter to remove chlorine, then the RO membrane. The sediment stage stops the carbon clogging, and the carbon stage protects the membrane, because chlorine in mains water damages RO membranes.
When should I replace sediment and carbon pre-filters?
Replace the sediment cartridge when it looks discoloured or the flow drops. Replace carbon cartridges on a regular schedule, because spent carbon stops removing chlorine without any visible sign. Changing pre-filters on time is far cheaper than replacing a damaged membrane.
